New research project examines the fight against internet crime

New research project aims to find solutions on how DK Hostmaster can contribute to the fight against online crime.

How can domain name administrators like DK Hostmaster contribute to the fight against online crime like sale of illegal medicine and counterfeit goods. That is some of the questions that a new research project will examine.

The research project will look into the balance between ensuring the operation of the internet’s infrastructure and crime prevention in the light of for instance privacy protection and freedom of speech. On this background, the project will suggest new proposals of how domain name administrators as DK Hostmaster can contribute to reduce online crime.

Internet crime is an increasing problem, but it is often difficult to prosecute the people behind the crime. Many hide behind fake or stolen identities and the crime is also often directed towards other countries than the homeland of the criminals. Therefore, there has been an increased focus on domain name administrators and other actors behind the infrastructure of the internet and their possibilities of taking action against online crime.

The project is the first of its kind worldwide, and Sebastian Schwemer who is a lawyer and an economist will lead the research project. DK Hostmaster, DIFO and Centre for Information and Innovation Law (CIIR) are behind the project that is also financially supported by Innovation Fund Denmark.
